Ok…Attempt number 2

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

After a long absence I’ve decided to give this thing another try. Perhaps I might have something worthwhile to say this time as my job in the industry has changed quite a bit from several years ago.

I work for Polycom now. I am technically in sales, but have many roles within the company.

My current project – help sell our new business media phone that is certified for use in Cisco environments.

Check it out here:

My apologies for the product shill.

Spyware/botware – how bad is it getting?

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

Well, given that my eldest son (7) stumbled on some spyware, it’s got to be pretty bad.

To top it all off, EA (Electronic Arts) with the launch of Battlefield 2142 is now bundling spyware in its product.  They want to better target advertising.  So, if you pay $50 for this game, all of your Internet activity will be monitored by EA, so they can advertise to you more than they already do.

Now, I’ll admit, I’ll play a game every now and again.  I own Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield 2.  But if this is the direction EA is taking things, I’m done buying their junk.

I have enough problems keeping my computers running smoothly without someone else messing up  my system just so I can get better advertising.

Good job EA, you just lost another customer.

Friggen spam

Monday, October 16th, 2006

Well, I finally got around to installing spam filters here.  Comment spam was just horrendous.

Now I need to actually start writing things again.

Whoa it’s been a while

Thursday, December 15th, 2005

Well, sorry to my 2 readers about having been gone so long. Some interesting things have happened.

I quit my job. (I won’t go into why)

I started my own business. I’ll say I enjoy being on my own. I can now truly serve customers they way I believe they need to be served. Anyone need help with IP telephony or networking? ;-)

I wrote my first AXL/SOAP application. It allows you to forward or unforward any line on any CallManager based phone from the phone. Why is this unique? Well, since currently you can only forward or unforward the primary line on a phone, I thought it’d be nice to be able to do it from any line (I’ve seen zillions of customer requests on this one). I’ve zipped the app and the source code (and documentation) up and it can be found here (or check files and downloads):

Want your own blog space?

I’ve got ample room, and could host a few folk’s blogs if anyone would be interested. Preferably tech-related sites. Just send an email or drop a comment.

The Fourth of July

Monday, July 4th, 2005

Well, it’s July Fourth. Happy Independence Day.

I just spent nearly $500 on fireworks over the past three nights, and wow, was it worth it.

I guess I’m part pyro.

The appearance of this site

Sunday, June 26th, 2005

I will admit, first and foremost, web design is not my strong suit, but my strong suit kicks the shit out of every coder on the block.

This site is powered by Wordpress, and the forums are phpBB. That’s the best I can do for now.

If anyone wants to offer help or suggestions on how to make this place look any better, please comment.

For now, it’s going to be basic, simple, and functional ;-)

My VoIP Blog

Sunday, June 26th, 2005

Allow me to introduce myself, I’m Philip Walenta, a CCIE, with lots of voice and networking experience.

I created this blog site with the intent of documenting the successes, trials and tribulations of VoIP and networking in general.

Through the coming months (and hopefully years) I’ll detail what I do, what I see, and what others see, which in my hopes will foster discussion, promote ideas, better products, and better ways of doing things because I believe this industry needs it.

I’m also going to keep product shilling to a minimum, because I’m not big on advertising things that already have the crap marketed out of them :-) .

Please feel free to comment on anything you see.
